Misleading: Viral video does not show Karachi’s Gul Plaza fire

Several social media users shared a video that supposedly shows the Gul Plaza shopping centre in Karachi being burnt to ashes and collapsing after a massive fire.

However, the claims are misleading as the video does not relate to the Gul Plaza fire.

What happened

A massive fire erupted on Saturday night at the mall located on M.A. Jinnah Road and was finally doused after more than thirty hours. The death toll has reached fourteen while dozens are still feared trapped inside the building.

Social media users have been sharing videos the burning building and the rescue operations as the shopping plaza partially collapsed. However, several unrelated video of similar fire incident are also been shared.

PTI leader Qasim Suri, who is based in the United States, posted a video on Facebook, claiming it relates to the Gul Plaza fire. The video show a building collapses after being engulfed by a massive fire.

“Gul Plaza in Karachi Sadddar was razed to the ground several hours after the fire broke out, while the Karachi administration and the incompetent Sindh government remained asleep,” he said.

Fact Check

Fact Check Pakistan determined the post is misleading as the video is unrelated. The video relates to a fire that erupted in a factory in Landhi’s Export Processing Zone (EPZ) on December 5, 2025.

The event was widely covered by the local media. According to Dawn, the three-storey building spread over 2,000 square yards collapsed before fire could be brought under control at the Karachi Export Processing Zone (EPZ) within the Landhi industrial area.

 The video of the incident was shared by several media outlets that relate to the video of the allegedly Gul Plaza fire.

Therefore, the posts are misleading as the video is not related to the Gul Plaza fire.
