FAKE: Trump has not pledged to get Imran Khan out of jail if elected
A video shared on social media shows former US President Donald Trump expressing support for imprisoned former Pakistani prime minister Imran Khan if he wins the 2024 elections.
“Hello my Pakistani-American friends,” Trump says in the clip which can be found here. “I promise, if I win, I will try my best to get Imran Khan out of jail as soon as possible. He is my friend, I love him, I will support him to take over the government again.”
The post received more than 700 shares in over a week and has spread widely on social media site X, formerly known as Twitter.
The video has been altered and is a “deep fake”.
In the original video, published by NBC News in 2017, Trump discusses his plans to fire then-Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) Director James Comey with anchor Lester Holt.
The added audio clearly does not align with the movement of Trump’s lips. Trump praised Imran Khan in office, but didn’t say he’d try to get him out of prison
The audio does not sync with Trump’s lips in the clip although his attire and the background from the 2017 interview match the clip.
Trump makes no mention of Imran Khan in the interview. There are no credible news reports about Trump pledging to help free Khan if he is elected president again.mTrump has neither commented on the claim via his TRUTH Social account nor his website.
