Fact Check: Video showing Russian President Putin threatening Pakistan is fake
India-based and pro-Afghan social media accounts posted a video allegedly showing Russian President Vladimir Putin threatening Pakistan after the recent conflict with Afghanistan.
Intent: The news has gained interest after recent border clashes between Pakistan and Afghanistan that lead to casualties on both sides before an immediate ceasefire was reached. Both countries have engaged in peace talks in Doha and Istanbul, brokered by Qatar and Turkiye, which have not yielded any results.
Among the ongoing political tensions, India-based social media accounts have been spreading disinformation against Pakistan.
Fact Check Pakistan has determined that the purported video of President Putin is manipulated and completely fake and has no connection with Pakistan or Afghanistan.
An obscure X account, Afghan Defense, shared the video on October 29, captioned, “Vladimir Putin’s warning to the Pakistani military regime: We are ready to provide all kinds of military & civilian assistance to the people of Afghanistan whenever needed. We do not want anyone to disrupt the peace of the Afghans.”
The video was posted on other social media accounts seen here, here, here, and here.
Fact Check
The video was originally posted on the YouTube account of Reuters news agency on October 24 titled, “Putin says new US sanctions won’t affect Russia’s economy.”
The description of the video says, “Russian President Putin remained defiant after US President Trump hit Russia’s two biggest oil companies with sanctions and said that Russia would never bow to pressure from the United States or any other country.
There is no mention of Pakistan or Afghanistan in the original video. It relates to the imposition of US sanctions on Russia.
Conclusion
Fact Check Pakistan has determined that the claim that viral video shows President Putin warning Pakistan while expressing support for Afghanistan is false.
The video is manipulated with an AI-generated audio dubbing.
Clarification
The Russian Embassy in Pakistan, in a post on X, also issued a clarification that the “video in which Russian President Vladimir Putin allegedly threatens Pakistan amid Pakistan-Afghanistan tensions is 100% FAKE”
The clip actually shows President Putin answering questions from the media after a meeting of the Russian Geographical Society’s Board of Trustees on October 23, 2025. Vladimir Putin did not even mention Pakistan or Afghanistan in his original comments.
“We emphasize that Russia supports the resolution of Pak-Afghan differences through political and diplomatic means and favors the resumption of constructive dialogue between Pakistan and Afghanistan – two countries friendly to Russia – including on counterterrorism and regional security issues,” it added.
