FACT CHECK: Picture is not of Pakistan Army officer killed in Afghan border clash

Several India based social media users claimed a Pakistani Army officer was killed in border clashes by the Afghan Taliban forces in Chaman, Balochistan.

The users also identified him as Lt Colonel Hassan Jehangir and claimed he was killed during a border clash on October 15. Pakistan and Afghanistan both engaged in deadly border skirmishes before reaching a mutual ceasefire on Oct 15.

An India based digital media outlet, Resonant News, shared a post on Instagram, captioned, “Another Lt Col rank officer of Pakistan Army in a TTP attack. Lt Col Hassan Jehangir was killed in a coordinated attack by the Afghan Taliban and TTP along the Chaman border. He was among 4 security personnel killed on Oct 1.

Similar posts were made by several other social media users as seen blow.

Fact Check Pakistan has determined the army officer in the picture was not killed during a border clash in Pakistan.

The picture is of Colonel Hasan Imtiaz who passed away in 2021. This was evident from a post on Facebook dated 28 July regarding the death anniversary of the officer.

A translation of the caption says, “Colonel Muhammad Hassan Imtiaz was a Pakistani military officer who earned respect and admiration among his colleagues for his services and humanitarian spirit. He was martyred on July 28, 2021, due to a brain haemorrhage.”

A Facebook page dedicated to the army officer also shared the picture. This proves that the picture is old and unrelated to the current events.

Thus, it has been concluded that the army officer in the picture was not killed a border clash between Pakistan and Afghanistan.
