Australia has not dedicated World Cup victory to Imran Khan
A claim has circulated on social media suggesting that Australia, the 2023 World Cup champions, named the trophy after former prime minister Imran Khan.
The supposed evidence is a letter attributed to Australian Cricket Board (ACC) Chairman Mike Baird and CEO Nick Healy iinviting him to Australia as a chief guest for an ceremony. The letter also mentions that Imran Khan will also receives the Medal of the Order of Australia civil award.
An analysis by Fact Check Pakistan reveals that this letter lacks credibility and is fake. The letter and fake news was also shared by famous journalist Sabir Sakir on his social media handle.
There is no mention of such reports of honouring Imran Khan by the official channels of Cricket Ausstralia. The Australian High Commission has not confirmed the existence of the letter, casting doubt on the authenticity of the claim.
The letter, circulating on a social media platform, sparked curiosity and scepticism among netizens. The alleged dedication of the trophy to Imran Khan and the invitation to receive Australia’s highest civilian honour seemed unusual.
An examination of Cricket Australia’s official social media pages and website for any acknowledgement of the letter found no communcation, further discrediting such claims.
