Video of Dubai airport attack is AI-generated

A viral video claims to show the moment a drone strike hits the Dubai international airport as people flee in panic after the attack.

The video was shared on X, captioned, “Video from Dubai Airport CCTV and attack on its terminal”. The video has been viewed 762,000 times.

The video is AI-generated, and hence deemed fake.

Context

The Dubai International airport was evacuated on Sunday after a reported Iranian missile/drone strike. Dramatic footage shows people fleeing a smoke-filled passageway strewn with furniture and debris at Dubai International Airport, where officials confirmed four staff had been injured. Hours later, an explosion near the airport sent a thick plume of black smoke into the air.

Because of that real-world event, many AI-generated recreations or fakes began circulating on social media.

Fact Check

The video has several inconsistencies and glitches typically seen in AI generated content. The Arabic script on the “Check-in” signs is gibberish and disconnected letters when viewed closely.

It must be carefully observed that a man is seen walking through a barrier. This is a classic AI artifact called clipping that fails to calculate solid-body collisions, leading to objects (or people) passing through one another.

The video attempts to mimic the aesthetic of an airport and is not a real location. The layout and check-in desks don’t match the actual interior of Dubai International’s Terminal 1, 2, or 3.

Dubai Airport is known for highly distinct branding and signage. The blurry, incoherent signs in the video are a hallmark of AI trying to guess what an airport looks like.
