Pakistan Army female officer was not killed in border attack, photo is AI-generated

Several India and Afghanistan-based social media accounts claimed that a female officer of the Pakistan Army was killed during a terrorist attack along the border.

It was also claimed that the woman, whom they identified as Kanwal Baig, an officer of the Medical Corps, was sexually assaulted before being killed.

An X user, who regularly spreads disinformation, posted, “Captain Kanwal Baig of the Pakistan Army Medical Corps was killed in an attack on the Pakistan Afghanistan border two days ago. She was a resident of Matkiyal village in Rawalpindi.”

An Afghanistan based digital outlet claimed, “Pakistani soldiers have raped and killed captain Kanwal Baig, a medical corps officer. Two days ago, she was assaulted by her own colleagues and later brutally shot.”

The users cited a journalist, Wahajat Ali, based in Gilgit-Baltistan, who also shared the news about the female officer’s killing.

Fact Check

Fact Check Pakistan has determined the news is bogus, fabricated, and completely fake, while the picture of the alleged soldier is AI-generated.

This is evident by the distortions in the artefacts, a common feature of AI tools. It can be clearly observed the nametag is being erroneously misspelled.

The news of the soldier’s killing or assault has not been reported by the media, ISPR, the military’s press wing, government officials, or local journalists.

It should be mentioned that female soldiers are usually not deployed in high-tension or volatile regions, while Medical Corps officers are not sent to the battlefield.

Therefore, it has been concluded that claims about the female soldier’s killing in a militant attack in the border region are FALSE.
