MISLEADING: Woman in viral video pushed off a train in Turkey is not Pakistani

A social media user shared a post claiming that a group of women in Turkey violently pushed a Pakistani woman off a train.

The X user, who shares pro Afghan and anti Pakistani content, posted a video with caption, “A disturbing scene from Turkey: a group of Turkish women violently force a Pakistani woman off a train even as she clutches a baby stroller. The most heartbreaking part is the little girl silently watching, learning hatred instead of humanity. So much for the so-called “friendship” between the two nations.”

The video shows a woman in black abaya being confronted by a group of women on a train. The women speaking in foreign language hit her with a water bottle before pushing a stroller off the train and forcing the woman to leave.

Fact Check Pakistan determined the video is old and unrelated. The video doesn’t now show a Pakistani woman and aims to spread distrust between the friendly countries Pakistan and Turkiye.

A simple Google Reverse image shows the incident occurred in May 2024. The incident involved a Syrian woman who was forced off a metro train.

The video was posted on an article by Jordan based media outlet Al Bawaba dated May 21, 2024, titled, “Fight inside Istanbul metro, Turkish women threw Syrian outside.”

The article says, “ A video has circulated on social media showing Turkish women attacking and throwing a woman, who is said to hold the Syrian nationality, outside a metro in Istanbul.

“A video went viral of multiple women attacking and pushing a Syrian woman outside the metro door after a dispute between them, as said by some people.

In the clip, a woman began to push the Syrian woman outside the metro in the city of Eskişehir, central Turkey. She then took her baby stroller as well and threw it outside in front of her children.”

The article quotes Turkish journalist, Ibrahim Haskologlu,  saying “the Syrian woman allegedly “insulted” the Turkish passengers in offensive terms, telling them, “You have no honor” sparking anger in the metro and leading to a fight.”

The video and news report was also posted on several Turkish and Arabic news websites that can be seen here, here, here, here, and here.

Fact Check Pakistan concludes the woman in the video is not Pakistani. Thus the claim that a Pakistani woman was insulted and humiliated in Turkiye is misleading.
