No ban on Suzuki Alto on motorways, highways, clarifies NHMP

The National Highways and Motorways Police (NHMP) have denied reports claiming that Suzuki Alto vehicle has been banned from motorways due to safety concerns.

The rumours surfaced after a tragic accident involving an Alto and a truck on the motorway, in which the car was flattened, raising concerns over the safety of small vehicles. The graphic visuals of the accident went viral on social media.

There were reports that the vehicle will be banned on motorways from April 1, 2025, and a fine of Rs5000 will be imposed on driving the car.

As speculation spread online, the NHMP issued a statement dismissing the reports and clarified:

“A baseless and misleading claim is circulating on social media, stating that a specific vehicle (Alto) has been banned from entering the motorway. The Motorway Police would like to clarify that this news is not based on any credible or official source and holds no truth. The public is urged not to trust or spread unverified information. For accurate and authentic updates, always refer to official sources of the Motorway Police.”

Meanwhile, Pak Suzuki also denied claims that the company plans to discontinue the Alto in Pakistan.

Despite being one of Pakistan’s best-selling hatchbacks, the 660cc Alto has come under scrutiny due to its lack of essential safety features.

The locally assembled VX variant lacks airbags and an anti-lock braking system (ABS), making it vulnerable to accidents. With a weight of around 700 kg and weak structural panels, the Alto offers minimal protection in high-speed crashes and increases the risk of fatal accidents.
